Nikon D40X

(05/03/09)
Summary: No one was more surprised that me when Nikon passed through the press releases for the D40X. Just under four months since the arrival of the six megapixel D40 and Nikon were about to reveal a ten megapixel version of the same (save for a base ISO 100 sensitivity and 3.0 fps shooting speed) camera.That it only took four months for the D40... Pros: ; Kit lens is better quality than many others; Good fast auto focus system (only 3 areas but that's not a big issue for this camera); Reliable, sophisticated, if sometimes a little conservative matrix metering system; For a Pentamirror the viewfinder delivers a surprisingly bright image; Good SD card throughput and USB 2.0 transfer speed;
Cons: ; Disappointing automatic white balance performance in incandescent light; No depth-of-field preview; No status LCD panel on top of camera (we hate to see these go); Fixed exposure steps (1/3 EV); Occasional visibility of moire artifacts (although seldom); Disappointingly RAW+JPEG setting only records Basic quality JPEG's; No RAW

Nikon D40x

(07/11/07)
Summary: The Nikon D40x is essentially a 10 megapixel version of the slightly older 6 megapixel D40, and thankfully the increase in resolution hasn't negatively affected the overall image quality. Indeed, I couldn't see any noticeable difference in terms of noise between ISO settings on the D40x and the same settings on the D40, which means that... Read the full review

Pros: ; Small, light and comfortable. * Very easy to use with helpful menus. * Consumer-friendly photos out of the camera. * Nikon's legendary metering is rarely fooled.
Cons: ; Features weaker than 10 Mpixel rivals. * No auto-focus with certain, older lenses. * Some settings require too many button presses. * Basic 3-point AF and no DOF preview.

Digital Camera Magazine Title:

Nikon D40x

Summary: The D40x produces superb colour images, but why is it so expensive compared to the D40? The convoluted controls may be tolerable in the D40, but they're harder to stomach here. The £600 price pitches it against some cameras that either undercut it out-spec it. Read the full review

Nikon D40x Review

Summary: We can be brief; the Nikon D40x is a very fine and smart DSLR camera that offers a lot of quality for a low price. The D40 camera was welcomed enthusiastically and quickly left its competition behind. The different camera reviews almost always showed a positive conclusion, also with our DIWA colleagues, who awarded the D40 with a DIWA... Read the full review

Verdict: The Nikon D40x makes a very nice first dSLR, though experienced SLR shooters looking for a Nikon should spend the extra cash for the D80
Pros: ; Comfortable, compact body design; very low noise at higher ISOs; highly customisable menus; 10.2-megapixel CCD sensor
Cons: ; Slow kit lenses; RAW editing software costs extra; controls can be awkward; occasionally slow to focus; no automatic sensor cleaning; RAW-plus-JPEG mode limited to basic instead of fine JPEG compression

DCRP Review: Nikon D40x

Summary: Read the full review
Pros: ; AF-assist lamp; Very good photo quality, though see issues below; Solid construction; feels better in the hand than the competition; Large, bright, and sharp 2.5" LCD; Robust performance (even more so than the D40); Useful features for beginners like D-Lighting, redeye removal, assist images, help system; Full manual controls; USB 2.0
Cons: ; Images are overly saturated and a bit soft at default settings, in this reviewer's opinion; No battery grip available; Video cable not included; ridiculous AC adapter pricing; Some purple fringing with kit lens; No RAW image manipulation software included; Limited selection of AF-S lenses means that many Nikkor lenses (mostly primes)
